Testimonials

The mural was perfect. Couldn't have been better. The paper hangers were incredible and it's almost impossible to find a seam, even if you're looking for it. They said the strips matched beautifully and the whole thing went up without any problems at all.

Everyone loved the finished product and so many folks asked how in the world we did the background. To be able to image onto vinyl wallpaper is so much better than laminated paper. I'd never do it any other way. What a great product!

Now the Fine Arts Department want's a wall...and so does everybody else! Thanks for all your help in the process.

Our Recommendations for materials in different situations

Wall Mural Materials Installed with Wallpaper Paste

Our PVC-Free Pre-Pasted Wallpaper is our only pre-pasted product. It's also eco-friendly, but even if that's not something you're concerned about, this is an excellent product with the convenience of a pre-pasted backing. Even though it doesn't have any surface protection, it's durable enough for commercial use. It passed industry standard ASTM D2486-06 scrub test of 100 cycles of cleaning with Formula 409 and a scrub brush while still maintaining image performance.

Our Wallpaper is the most popular material for indoor custom wall murals. It has a special vinyl laminate that makes it extremely durable and it can be applied with standard wallpaper paste, as can our Textured Wallcoverings. This material is printed with the same technology that we use for our fine art reproductions, and it is the finest quality wall covering product on the market.

The textured materials are a less expensive product because they don't require the protective laminate. The print can be cleaned with water and mild cleaners, but harsh chemicals can damage the print so if you need to use this in an environment that may required these chemicals, the standard Wallpaper is a better choice. While the Wallpaper has a smooth finish and finer detail, it's very common for large murals to be printed from images that don't have the best resolution, so the textured wallcoverings can actually look better because the texture hides the lack of resolution. Of the textured products, the Artist Canvas and Suede textures are the most popular, but look through the images in the Printing Materials tab that show the various textures so see which best suits your tastes. You can also request a printed sample of any of these materials by requesting them from our Contact form.

Self Adhesive Wall Mural Materials

For installations that require removability with the option to reinstall, the WallWrap and PhotoStick fabric are excellent choices. The WallWrap is our favorite because it's thickness makes it the easiest to install, and also helps hide any wall imperfections and keeps any underlying color or pattern from showing through. The Classic version can be protected with the same laminate we use on the Wallpaper to make an extremely durable, self adhesive wallcovering. The Caviar texture is the most popular for general use, and the Monet is popular when printing an artistic wall mural. Keep in mind that this vinyl products can shrink somewhat, so multiple panel prints need to have overlapped seams so that any shrinkage doesn't make the seam visible.

PhotoStick is a fabric material, which is different from all the other wall mural options. Normal removable adhesive products actually become more aggressive over time, so that after 6 months to a year, they are basically permanent and removing them can damage the wall. But our products stay removable and can even be reapplied multiple times so they're great for wall graphics, custom wall decals, or even entire custom photo murals. Being a fabric, PhotoStick won't tear or wrinkle, which is a great feature, but it's also not as thick as the WallWrap which means you can get some show through if you install it over a dark or brightly colored wall or wallpaper, so it's best if used over a light surface. Since this is a fabric, it won't shrink like the vinyl self adhesive products so it's seams can be double cut or overlapped.

MagicStik is an economical choice, but for larger graphics and full murals, don't expect to be able to remove and reuse the material. We've found it's too difficult for larger graphics to be removed without stretching or tearing the material, which makes it difficult or impossible to reinstall. Smaller wall graphics work fine because they have less surface area, but it's not the best material for large murals if the ability to remove and reuse is important because of this.

For commercial installations on a budget, adhesive backed vinyls can be used, either directly on a smooth surface, or attached to a rigid or flexible substrate in panels for easy mounting. They can be protected with a laminate for greater durability.

Building Wrap Vinyl is a great choice for covering otherwise difficult surfaces such as concrete, cinder block, brick and stucco. These surfaces are often left without graphics because most materials won't stick to them, but Building Wrap will stick, and come off cleanly when you want to remove it.

Keep in mind that most vinyls will shrink somewhat over time, so they may not be the best choice where overlapping seams need to be very precise.

What is the turnaround time?

Normal turnaround time is 4-5 days. During the order process you will be asked if you have a specific due date, and if you do, we will adjust your shipping method, if necessary, to get your order to you on time. If you need your order even quicker, we also have a rush service. If you authorize rush charges, we can get your order shipped the same day or the next day. Rush charges are typically 50% of your order up to a maximum of $75. If we're able to meet your deadline without bumping other jobs, we won't actually charge the rush charge, but you must authorize the rush to guarantee delivery.

How big does my photo need to be to print well as a wall mural?
This is a difficult question to answer because of several factors, but in general, the bigger your original image, the better the results will be. As a general reference, an uncompressed file from a 5 megapixel camera will be reasonable quality for a full height wall mural. An 8 megapixel camera will produce good results and 12 megapixels or more will produce very good results. The biggest impediment to a quality print at a larger size from a digital photo is often jpeg compression artifacts. If you've followed our advice from above on how to get the best quality from your camera, you can often print your image quite large with good results. Obviously, the more megapixels your camera has, the larger you can print your image without loosing quality, all other things being equal. Because we use special software to enlarge images to their full print size, it's best not to enlarge your images before you send them. Textured wallcovering products will often make a questionable image look better than on wallpaper since the texture helps hide the lack of resolution. Another factor to consider is viewing distance. A print that shows a lack of resolution due to enlargement up close, might look just fine from arms length. We've printed images at 16 feet wide from 8 megapixel cameras that look very good from five feet away, so where a print will be displayed and how close you expect it to be viewed from are important to consider when deciding how large a print can be made. When in doubt, send us your file and we'll examine it and let you know how large we think it can go and still look good.
How wide will each panel of my wall mural be?

Generally we make each panel of a larger wall mural 48 inches wide. If the dimensions of your mural are such that narrower panels are necessary to divide it into equal sections, we may make the panels narrower. For example, if a mural were 80" wide, we might split the mural into two 40" panels, rather than one 48" and one 32" panel. For wallpaper and textured vinyl wallcoverings that require wallpaper paste for installation, we leave a 1"-2" overlap between panels to make alignment and trimming easier. For self adhesive products, we leave a 1/2" overlap since those materials require you leave the overlap between panels rather than double cut and butting the seams.

For smaller murals or graphics, we try to keep the image in one piece if possible.

How do I install a wallpaper mural?

Wall Preparation

Wall should be prepped to a smooth, clean, and dry surface prior to installation. Wallcovering will not hide wall flaws such as: nail holes, bumps, or dirt.

Proper surface preparation is key to getting great results. To prepare the surface properly, we recommend that you prime all surfaces with a universal, white-pigmented, mold inhibiting wallcovering primer. Use acrylic wallcovering primers such as Professional Ultra Prime (PRO-977), Golden Harvest White Bite, or Allpro Ultra Prep 685. Priming provides a sound surface that wallcovering will adhere to. It is recommended to strip down previous layer(s) of wallcovering. The wallcovering may seem to be firmly adhered to the wall, but the addition of another layer can cause adhesion failure.

Prime over glossy paint with one of the above mentioned primers.

Using a pencil, mark straight horizontal and vertical lines on your wall to line up the first panels.

Applying Paste

See question below about wallpaper paste for recommended adhesive.

Brush or roll an even coat of paste over entire back of wallcovering. Pay particular attention to run over edges so they are sure to be pasted. Fold each end toward the middle, pasted sides together, aligning the edges carefully so they do not dry out. CAUTION: Do not crease wallcovering. Allow to “relax” for ten minutes (booking). This will allow the adhesive to penetrate the wallpaper, which is important to a successful installation.

Hanging Information

Avoid burnishing the face of the material. Use a wallcovering brush or a soft plastic scraper to smooth the wallcovering onto the wall. Do not allow vinyl adhesive to dry on surface as it may leave a white residue. Wash off excess paste from face of wallcovering as you hang it with a cellulose sponge. The cellulose sponge must be rinsed in clean water after every use. Dry with a clean cloth. Place the second strip to the edge of the first strip. Tape seams before overlapping and double cutting to avoid getting adhesive on the face of the wallpaper. If paste does get on the face, clean it off immediately with clean warm water and dry with a clean lint less towel. Use a soft bristle brush to wash the ceiling and the baseboard to remove any paste residue.

The low wet expansion of these products allows double cutting at the seams. Overlapping the seams is not recommended. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to corners.

How do I install the PVC-Free Pre-Pasted Wallpaper

Wall Preparation

Wall should be prepped to a smooth, clean, and dry surface prior to installation. Wallcovering will not hide wall flaws such as: nail holes, bumps, or dirt.

Hanging over Dry Wall: For best results the dry wall should have a coat of builder’s primer and one coat of latex paint. Typically, new construction will have a coat of each on the dry wall. Be sure the treated wall is free from surface dirt and other contaminates. Hanging over satin and gloss paint or a single coat of primer is permissible.

Hanging over Paint: Test the wall to be sure that the paint adhesion is strong. There are a variety of methods to test for the quality of adhesion. All painted walls should be primed before hanging wallpaper and free from debris.

Hanging over walls previously covered in Wallpaper: Remove all adhesive from the wall by sanding or adhesive remover. Also remove any remnant of the previous wallcovering. Prime the wall prior to wallcovering installation.

Hanging over Paneling: Fill all grooves to make the surface smooth and uniform. Prime with a primer that promotes adhesion. A wall liner may also be applied to make the surface uniform.

Using a pencil, mark straight horizontal and vertical lines on your wall to line up the first panels.

Activate the Adhesive

1. Separate the panels.

2. Roll one panel loosely with the printed / design side in.

3. Place the rolled panel in a water trough long enough to fully wet the panel and activate the pre-paste, approximately 10-15 seconds.

4. Extract the roll pulling the leading edge out of the trough slowly to ensure the paste is fully wetted and activated.

5. “Book” the sheet by folding the pasted side of the paper back against itself bringing the paste in contact with itself. For best results allow the sheet to remain “booked” for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do not crease the paper when folding. The “booking” process allows the sheet to relax prior to installation.

Note: The wallpaper is designed to hang and strip easily due to the synergistic design of both the pre-paste and the base sheet. “Paste-the-wall” application systems are not recommended.

Hanging Information

Avoid burnishing the face of the material. Use a wallcovering brush or a soft plastic scraper to smooth the wallcovering onto the wall. Do not allow adhesive to dry on surface as it may leave a white residue. Wash off excess paste from face of wallcovering as you hang it with a cellulose sponge. The cellulose sponge must be rinsed in clean water after every use. Dry with a clean cloth. Place the second strip to the edge of the first strip. Use a clean wet sponge or soft bristle brush to wash the ceiling and the baseboard to remove any paste residue.

The low wet expansion of these products allows double cutting at the seams. Overlapping the seams is not recommended. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to corners.

Roman Adhesives R-35 Primer, also called Pro-93, is a good wall primer. This would be painted on to prepare wall for adhesive.

Using a pencil, mark straight horizontal and vertical lines on your wall to line up the first panels.

Adhesives

See the question below on wallpaper paste for recommended adhesives. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for using the adhesive. When purchasing your adhesive be sure to mention your wall covering is vinyl, not paper.

Applying Adhesive

Hang wallcovering with a premium quality heavy-duty clear pre-mixed adhesive. Use of a mildew inhibitor in the adhesive is recommended. Do not dilute adhesive. This will allow the adhesive to penetrate the wallcovering fabric, which is important to a successful installation.

Installing the Panels

Avoid burnishing the face of the material. Use a wallcovering brush or a soft plastic scraper to smooth the wallcovering onto the wall. Do not rub. Do not allow vinyl adhesive to dry on surface as it may leave a white residue. Wash off excess paste from face of wallcovering as you hang it with a cellulose sponge. The cellulose sponge must be rinsed in clean water after every use. Blot dry with a clean cloth. Place the second strip to the edge of the first strip. Tape seams before overlapping and double cutting to avoid getting adhesive on the wallcovering. If paste does get on the vinyl, clean it off immediately with clean warm water and blot dry with a clean lint less towel. Use a soft bristle brush to wash the ceiling and the baseboard to remove any paste residue. Do not leave any overlap on the seams since vinyl will not adhere to itself. Seams should be vertical, have a tight fit, and be free from air and paste bubbles. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to corners.

How do I install a removable self adhesive wall mural?

Removable self adhesive products, such as Wallwrap or MagicStik, will adhere to most clean, smooth surfaces. Desired results have been achieved on a variety of surfaces including but not limited to drywall, wood paneling, glass, metal, and composite board constructions. These products may not adhere properly to textured surfaces such as textured paints, textured wallpaper, cinder block or brick, outdoor walls, or any surface that is jagged or rough. For best results we recommend dry wall that has been primed and painted (a white semi-gloss paint will promote the best adhesion and ease of removal). Please follow primer or paint instructions for application and optimal curing time prior to installing media.

Acclimation

Prior to install, the panels should be rolled out flat and allowed to relax and reach room temperature. Recommended room acclimation time is 2 hours.

Surface Preparation

Make sure the surface is clean, smooth, dry, undamaged, free of mold, mildew, grease or stains, and structurally intact. If moisture is present, immediately identify and eliminate the source(s) of the moisture and verify that all wall surfaces are completely dry before proceeding. Any mold or mildew MUST be removed from walls and hanging surfaces prior to installation. Use a warm damp cloth to wipe off any dirt or dust and allow the surface to completely dry prior to installation. Do not use any chemicals to clean the intended surface. These products have been tested on many surfaces and should stick aggressively. They can be repositioned and re-applied as long as the adhesive surface has not been contaminated with dirt, dust, finger prints, etc. Drywall surfaces should be prepared with primer and paint, for best results we recommend a semi-gloss paint. If newly painted allow to dry for 30 days prior to installation.

Installation

Determine the starting point for the graphic. Small images could start from the right or left side, but we recommend larger graphics begin by installing the center panel first. Note: Use care to make sure the panels will cover full height and width of the project area. Some floors and ceilings are not square, so make sure the graphic covers the widest or tallest areas for the project.

Create a plum line on the wall with a pencil to create an edge guide for each panel.

For ease of handling, roll the first panel into a tight roll with printed image rolled inside. Now unroll 6" and peel back the liner paper 6". Cut away the unrolled portion of lining paper to expose the adhesive backing. Using the plum line, carefully align the top of your panel so that it is square from side to side, and the edge matches with your plumb line. Now the 6" that was exposed can be stuck against the wall surface.

With the top of the panel properly adhered to the wall, slowly peel the next foot or so of backing. Try to expose only a few feet of adhesive at a time to prevent unwanted sticking of the lower parts of your graphic. Work you way down the panel using a felt wrapped squeegee to carefully smooth the material onto the wall. We recommend using slow and even pressured side to side strokes, starting from the middle of the panel and moving outward to the sides. Once a few feet of material has been stuck to the wall, it should be possible to allow the remaining portion of the panel to drop to the floor. Now you can simply continue the procedure to easily progress down the wall.

When the entire panel has been positioned properly and smoothed, be sure to press down on the perimeter edge of each individual panel to assure good adhesion at the seams and edges. Any bubbles under the material should come out during the smoothing process. If necessary you can lift the material to release stubborn bubbles or large wrinkles.

Install remaining panels using the same method as above. Panel seams should overlap 1/2" using care to make sure of proper graphic alignment during installation. After all panels are installed, trim perimeter "bleed" around all edges using a sharp utility knife.

Removal should be as simple as pulling down from one corner. These products were designed to cleanly and easily be removed in complete panels. If the wall surface was prepared properly there will be no damage to drywall.

Should I install my wall mural, or should I hire someone else to do it?

For wallpaper and textured vinyl wallcoverings, we generally recommend having a professional paper hanger install your mural. The process isn't any more difficult than installing other wallpaper, but since a custom wallpaper mural is more expensive than standard wallpaper, a mistake during installation could be more costly. For that reason, professional installation is the safest approach. Also, many people are used to installing wallpaper in smaller sections and may have a more difficult time with larger 48" panels.

Self adhesive products are more forgiving and are designed so that you can install them yourself without as much concern for ruining your mural. Since all our self adhesive products can be removed and reapplied, mistakes are much easier to correct without damaging the mural.

What type of wallpaper paste do you recommend?

For Wallpaper

Clear adhesives such as Professional Ultra Premium Heavy Duty Clear Strippable (PRO-880), Golden Harvest GH-34 Clear Strippable, and Allpro Pro-Duty 3400 provide good adhesion and allow for easier stripping when the wall covering is to be removed or replaced.

Clay adhesives such as Professional Extra Strength (PRO-732), Professional Clay Strippable (PRO-774), Golden Harvest GH- 40, Allpro Extra Strength Vinyl 600, and Allpro Clay Strippable 661 have also been shown to be effective both during installation and the removal of these wallcovering materials.

Pastes such as Professional Heavy Duty Clear PRO-838 or Allpro Clear Hang 610 have a more aggressive adhesion and should be used for more permanent applications.

Vinyl over vinyl pastes tend to dry too quickly on these products and are not recommended.

For Textured Vinyl Wallcoverings

Below are some items which we can recommend. These adhesives are fairly common and can be found in many stores. There are other product that will work just fine, but we have tested these products and they are the most popular. Roman Adhesives:Pro-838 Heavy Duty Clear Adhesive or Ultra Pro -880 or Zinsser: Sure Grip -128 Heavy Duty Clear Adhesive.

Should these items not be available, look for a generic heavy duty adhesive for vinyl wall coverings.

How do I care for my wall mural?

Ordinary dirt and smudges can be removed with a mild soap and warm water. Clean from bottom of wall upward. Rinse thoroughly with clean water from the top down using a sponge. Deeply embossed wallcoverings need extra attention to remove suds or loosened dirt that may lodge in the embossing. Dry wallcovering with a soft lint free cloth or towel. For more difficult stains that are only surface deep, the use of a stronger detergent is recommended. Always test an inconspicuous area with the stronger detergent to be sure that the surface and ink are not damaged. DO NOT USE steel wool or powdered abrasive because they can damage the image and textured surface. DO NOT USE solvents, alcohol, pine oil, or cleaners that contain these kinds of products as they can remove the image and damage the textured surface. When cleaning, always take measures to prevent water from dripping behind molding.

When you're ready to order, you can use the main menu above or the Place Order buttons next to each item in the Printing Materials tab. The order process for wall murals is basically the same as for our other printing, but if you are not ordering a print of your own file, there is the extra step of finding and choosing a photo for your wall mural. This section will cover in detail how to find a photo for those who need one, and the steps you need to take to place an order for a wall mural using our order form.

Step 1: Choose the photo you want to print

If you already have a file or photo you want to use for your wall mural, then the most difficult part of the order process is over. If the photo you want to use is not in a digital format, that is to say you have a photo print, slide, or negative, then the first item you'll need to add to your order is the scanning service, which is listed under Scanning and Prepress Services. In most cases, the option "Scan and Proof for Originals up to 12x18" would be the correct service to choose.

If you don't have a photo or file already, there are several ways to obtain a photo. You can choose an image from our Mural Images Gallery page, or use the links to stock photo collections we have assembled. If you find an image you like on the Mural Images Gallery page, note the image number and the gallery it is found in on your order.

For stock photo image, we would have preferred to make the process easier by showing you a gallery of these stock photos like our Mural Images Gallery, but for reasons we cannot fathom, most of the major stock photo sites have rules preventing us from displaying images for you to choose from. So, to get around this, we have built links in the Image Gallery tab that will take you to collections we have assembled with one of our stock photo partners, istockphoto. Clicking on any of the links will open a window for you to browse the specified collection, but you are not limited to the images we have assembled. There are thousands of photos available so if you don't see what you are looking for, use the search function to look through the entire collection to find exactly the image you want.

We have taken care to only choose images that are available in a large enough size to reproduce well as a wall mural. If you find an image outside our collections, be sure the image is available in at least a "large" size, and preferably "X large" or even "XX large".

Once you locate the file you want, you have two options. If you have an account with istockphoto, or wish to open one, you can purchase credits and download the image yourself, then attach it to your order in the appropriate step, which is explained below. The second, and more popular option, is to note the image number of the photo you like, and indicate that image number in the Special Instructions area of the order, which is also explained below. So, look through our collections below or search to find a different image, and once you have found an image you like, continue on to the next step.

Step 2: Choose a material for your wall mural

When you first open the order form, there will be an expanding list of items on the left. If you use the Place Order button, you can skip to the next paragraph, otherwise, choose the Printing for Indoor Use option, then Wallpapers and choose from the materials in the drop down list. If you haven't already decided on the material for your wall mural, you can select different materials in this list and read about them to help you make your choice. If you need some help in deciding, you can also look in the Our Recommendations tab for some suggestions.

Once you have decided on the material you want, you will need to indicate if you are sending a file, providing a photo/film to be scanned, or if you are choosing a file from one of our collections, you would select the option None - need design. If you are sending a photo or film, or have identified a file number from our collections, you will need to indicate in the next step that a file is not needed for your order. If you are sending a digital photo, then you must indicate how you are sending the file. You can choose Upload Now and click the Upload button that appears to send your file at this point, which is recommended, you can choose to send your file later, or one of the other options.

Step 3: Enter the dimensions and quantity

Once you tell us how you are sending your file, you will be presented with a form to complete. Here you need to tell us the print width and print height in inches for your wall mural. If you are covering an entire wall or section of wall, it's a good idea to order your wall mural a few inches larger than your actual wall measurements. That way you will have some ability to adjust during installation if your walls, floors or ceilings are not plumb. Make sure the measurements are the overall dimensions of your mural, even if doors or windows are present and won't be covered by the mural. This is the only way to ensure the panels of your wall mural align correctly. If you are ordering wallpaper that has a repeating pattern, you can measure individual sections of your wall and order prints of different sizes to avoid the doors and windows, but this makes installation more difficult and isn't recommended.

Next enter the number of copies you want printed in the quantity field and the price will be calculated.

Step 4: Proofs and File sizing

Next you can request a proof. A printed proof on the actual material that your final print will be on is $30, but an electronic pdf or jpg proof is free. A pdf proof is good for checking the cropping and final sizing of your mural, but if you're concerned about the print quality of the photo you have chosen, a physical proof that shows a section of the mural at full size is the best way to see for yourself how the final product will look. If we feel the mural will print poorly, we will always contact you to discuss your options before printing, but since our expectations and yours may not match, and since a custom wallpaper mural cannot be returned, a proof is your best way to verify what the final print will look like in advance.

The final step before adding your print to the shopping cart is to tell us what you want us to do if your photo doesn't fit the size you told us to print it. The options are to have us size your file to fit the dimensions you provided and crop any excess, or to contact you for instructions. If you're sure that your image actually sizes correctly to your dimensions, it doesn't really matter which option you choose because neither one will be necessary. But, if you're not sure, you should either choose to have us contact you, or tell us to crop the image to fit. We'll do our best to crop your image in way that makes sense, but you should also be sure to request a pdf proof so you can see the results of the cropping.

Step 5: Check out

Once you've complete all the previous steps, click the Add to Cart button to add this print to your shopping cart. On the shopping cart screen you can see all the items you've added to your order, delete any that you don't want, and have another chance to upload your file if you chose Upload Later from the order form. You can also choose Add Another to add another item to your order.

You don't need to log in or create an account to select and add items to your shopping cart, but you will need to do so in order to complete your order. This is so your account history can be maintained for future reference and ordering convenience. Your account information is secure and confidential, and creating an account WILL NOT result in unwanted e-mails from us, or anyone else.

Once you have placed all the items in your cart you want, and are logged in to your account, click the Order Now button. You will be asked to specify either normal turnaround time for your order, or provide a specific due date. If you do specify a due date, you will also be given the option to authorize rush charge for your order. If you need your order completed in less than the normal 3-5 day turnaround, you should authorize rush charges to ensure you get your order on time. Rush charges are 50% of your order total, up to a maximum of $75. If we don't have to bump other jobs to meet your deadline, you won't be charged the rush fee, but if you don't authorize the charges, we'll do what we can to complete your order on time, but won't go so far as to bump other jobs. If you specify a due date that is not a rush, we will adjust the shipping method, if necessary, to ensure your order arrives by the date you specified. In this case, extra shipping charges may apply.

Next you will be asked to select the shipping method, and finally the payment type. You should know that your credit card is not being charged when you submit the form. We are collecting the information for your order, but you will not be charged until we have verified your order to make sure there were no mistakes made. That way, if there are aspects of your order that change, we can adjust the order and the shipping cost, if necessary, before you are charged.

Once you click the Order button, you will receive an order summary via e-mail for your records, and we will receive your order and the process can begin.

As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, please Contact Us and we'll be happy to help you with the process.
