Testimonials

The mural was perfect. Couldn't have been better. The paper hangers were incredible and it's almost impossible to find a seam, even if you're looking for it. They said the strips matched beautifully and the whole thing went up without any problems at all.

Everyone loved the finished product and so many folks asked how in the world we did the background. To be able to image onto vinyl wallpaper is so much better than laminated paper. I'd never do it any other way. What a great product!

Now the Fine Arts Department want's a wall...and so does everybody else! Thanks for all your help in the process.

Wall Mural Materials Installed with Wallpaper Paste

Our PVC-Free Pre-Pasted Wallpaper is our only pre-pasted product. It's also eco-friendly, but even if that's not something you're concerned about, this is an excellent product with the convenience of a pre-pasted backing. Even though it doesn't have any surface protection, it's durable enough for commercial use. It passed industry standard ASTM D2486-06 scrub test of 100 cycles of cleaning with Formula 409 and a scrub brush while still maintaining image performance.

Our Wallpaper is the most durable material for indoor custom wall murals. It has a special vinyl laminate that makes it extremely durable and it can be applied with standard wallpaper paste, as can our Emboss Wallcoverings. This material is printed with the same technology that we use for our fine art reproductions, and it is the finest quality wall covering product on the market.

The embossed vinyl wallcovering materials are a less expensive product because they don't require the protective laminate. The print can be cleaned with water and mild cleaners, but harsh chemicals can damage the print so if you need to use this in an environment that may required these chemicals, the standard Wallpaper is a better choice. While the Wallpaper has a smooth finish and finer detail, it's very common for large murals to be printed from images that don't have the best resolution, so the textured wallcoverings can actually look better because the texture hides the lack of resolution. Of the textured products, the Artist Canvas and Beach Sand textures are the most popular, but look through the images in the Printing Materials tab that show the various textures so see which best suits your tastes. You can also request a printed sample of any of these materials by requesting them from our Contact form.

Self Adhesive Wall Mural Materials

For installations that require removability with the option to reinstall, the WallWrap and PhotoStick fabric are excellent choices. The PhotoStick is our favorite it's a fabric material, which is different from all the other wall mural options. Normal removable adhesive products actually become more aggressive over time, so that after 6 months to a year, they are basically permanent and removing them can damage the wall. But PhotoStick stays removable and can even be reapplied multiple times so it's great for wall graphics and custom wall decals. Being a fabric, PhotoStick won't tear or wrinkle, which is a great feature, but it's also not as thick as the WallWrap which means you can get some show through if you install it over a dark or brightly colored wall or wallpaper, so it's best if used over a light surface.

MagicStik is an economical choice, but for larger graphics and full murals, don't expect to be able to remove and reuse the material. We've found it's too difficult for larger graphics to be removed without stretching or tearing the material, which makes it difficult or impossible to reinstall. Smaller wall graphics work fine because they have less surface area, but it's not the best material for large murals if the ability to remove and reuse is important because of this.

For commercial installations on a budget, adhesive backed vinyls can be used, either directly on a smooth surface, or attached to a rigid or flexible substrate in panels for easy mounting. They can be protected with a laminate for greater durability.

Building Wrap Vinyl is a great choice for covering otherwise difficult surfaces such as concrete, cinder block, brick and stucco. These surfaces are often left without graphics because most materials won't stick to them, but Building Wrap will stick, and come off cleanly when you want to remove it.

Keep in mind that most vinyls will shrink somewhat over time, so they may not be the best choice where overlapping seams need to be very precise.

Normal turnaround time is 4-5 business days. During the order process you will be asked if you have a specific due date, and if you do, we will adjust your shipping method, if necessary, to get your order to you on time. If you need your order even quicker, we also have a rush service. If you authorize rush charges, we can get your order shipped in 1-2 days. Rush charges are $75 per order. If we're able to meet your deadline without bumping other jobs, we won't actually charge the rush charge, but you must authorize the rush to guarantee delivery.

This is a difficult question to answer because of several factors, but in general, the bigger your original image, the better the results will be. As a general reference, an uncompressed file from a 5 megapixel camera will be reasonable quality for a full height wall graphic. An 8 megapixel camera will produce good results and 12 megapixels or more will produce very good results. Obviously, the more megapixels your camera has, the larger you can print your image without losing quality, all other things being equal. Because we use special software to enlarge images to their full print size, it's best not to enlarge your images before you send them. Textured wall graphic products will often make a questionable image look better than on smooth materials since the texture helps hide the lack of resolution. Another factor to consider is viewing distance. A print that shows a lack of resolution due to enlargement up close, might look just fine from arms length. We've printed images at 16 feet wide from 8 megapixel cameras that look very good from five feet away, so where a print will be displayed and how close you expect it to be viewed from are important to consider when deciding how large a print can be made. When in doubt, send us your file and we'll examine it and let you know how large we think it can go and still look good.

Generally we make each panel of a larger wall mural 48 inches wide. If the dimensions of your mural are such that narrower panels are necessary to divide it into equal sections, we may make the panels narrower. For example, if a mural were 80" wide, we might split the mural into two 40" panels, rather than one 48" and one 32" panel. For wallpaper and textured vinyl wallcoverings that require wallpaper paste for installation, we leave a 1"-2" overlap between panels to make alignment and trimming easier. For self adhesive products, we leave a 1/2" overlap since those materials require you leave the overlap between panels rather than double cut and butting the seams.

For smaller murals or graphics, we try to keep the image in one piece if possible.

Wall Preparation

Wall should be prepped to a smooth, clean, and dry surface prior to installation. Wallcovering will not hide wall flaws such as: nail holes, bumps, or dirt.

Proper surface preparation is key to getting great results. To prepare the surface properly, we recommend that you prime all surfaces with a universal, white-pigmented, mold inhibiting wallcovering primer. Use acrylic wallcovering primers such as Professional Ultra Prime (PRO-977), Golden Harvest White Bite, or Allpro Ultra Prep 685. Priming provides a sound surface that wallcovering will adhere to. It is recommended to strip down previous layer(s) of wallcovering. The wallcovering may seem to be firmly adhered to the wall, but the addition of another layer can cause adhesion failure.

Prime over glossy paint with one of the above mentioned primers.

Using a pencil, mark straight horizontal and vertical lines on your wall to line up the first panels.

Applying Paste

See question below about wallpaper paste for recommended adhesive.

Brush or roll an even coat of paste over entire back of wallcovering. Pay particular attention to run over edges so they are sure to be pasted. Fold each end toward the middle, pasted sides together, aligning the edges carefully so they do not dry out. CAUTION: Do not crease wallcovering. Allow to “relax” for ten minutes (booking). This will allow the adhesive to penetrate the wallpaper, which is important to a successful installation.

Hanging Information

Avoid burnishing the face of the material. Use a wallcovering brush or a soft plastic scraper to smooth the wallcovering onto the wall. Do not allow vinyl adhesive to dry on surface as it may leave a white residue. Wash off excess paste from face of wallcovering as you hang it with a cellulose sponge. The cellulose sponge must be rinsed in clean water after every use. Dry with a clean cloth. Place the second strip to the edge of the first strip. Tape seams before overlapping and double cutting to avoid getting adhesive on the face of the wallpaper. If paste does get on the face, clean it off immediately with clean warm water and dry with a clean lint less towel. Use a soft bristle brush to wash the ceiling and the baseboard to remove any paste residue.

The low wet expansion of these products allows double cutting at the seams. Overlapping the seams is not recommended. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to corners.

Wall Preparation

Wall should be prepped to a smooth, clean, and dry surface prior to installation. Wallcovering will not hide wall flaws such as: nail holes, bumps, or dirt.

Hanging over Dry Wall: For best results the dry wall should have a coat of builder’s primer and one coat of latex paint. Typically, new construction will have a coat of each on the dry wall. Be sure the treated wall is free from surface dirt and other contaminates. Hanging over satin and gloss paint or a single coat of primer is permissible.

Hanging over Paint: Test the wall to be sure that the paint adhesion is strong. There are a variety of methods to test for the quality of adhesion. All painted walls should be primed before hanging wallpaper and free from debris.

Hanging over walls previously covered in Wallpaper: Remove all adhesive from the wall by sanding or adhesive remover. Also remove any remnant of the previous wallcovering. Prime the wall prior to wallcovering installation.

Hanging over Paneling: Fill all grooves to make the surface smooth and uniform. Prime with a primer that promotes adhesion. A wall liner may also be applied to make the surface uniform.

Using a pencil, mark straight horizontal and vertical lines on your wall to line up the first panels.

Activate the Adhesive

1. Separate the panels.

2. Roll one panel loosely with the printed / design side in.

3. Place the rolled panel in a water trough long enough to fully wet the panel and activate the pre-paste, approximately 10-15 seconds.

4. Extract the roll pulling the leading edge out of the trough slowly to ensure the paste is fully wetted and activated.

5. “Book” the sheet by folding the pasted side of the paper back against itself bringing the paste in contact with itself. For best results allow the sheet to remain “booked” for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Do not crease the paper when folding. The “booking” process allows the sheet to relax prior to installation.

Note: The wallpaper is designed to hang and strip easily due to the synergistic design of both the pre-paste and the base sheet. “Paste-the-wall” application systems are not recommended.

Hanging Information

Avoid burnishing the face of the material. Use a wallcovering brush or a soft plastic scraper to smooth the wallcovering onto the wall. Do not allow adhesive to dry on surface as it may leave a white residue. Wash off excess paste from face of wallcovering as you hang it with a cellulose sponge. The cellulose sponge must be rinsed in clean water after every use. Dry with a clean cloth. Place the second strip to the edge of the first strip. Use a clean wet sponge or soft bristle brush to wash the ceiling and the baseboard to remove any paste residue.

The low wet expansion of these products allows double cutting at the seams. Overlapping the seams is not recommended. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to corners.

Preparing Your Wall

Surfaces to be covered must be clean, smooth, dry and structurally sound. Loose paint or other wallcoverings must be removed. In order to ensure maximum smoothness of installation, nail heads, nicks, gouges, and other surface imperfections should be filled, sanded smooth and sealed. On new walls, drywall joints should be taped, bedded and sanded smooth.

Mold and mildew require moisture in order to grow and, therefore, it is important to check the walls with a suitable moisture meter. Moisture content should not exceed 4%. Excessive moisture in wall needs to be corrected prior to the installation of the wallcovering. Remove any mold and mildew from existing wall and treat surfaces to inhibit future growth.

This emboss vinyl wallcovering can be installed over almost any surface that has been properly prepared. Do not hang vinyl over ball point pen writing, wax crayon, ink marker, oil based stains or any foreign matter that may bleed through the vinyl. Painted surfaces should be checked for possibility of pigment bleed-through. It is suggested that lead pencil be used to mark vinyl or wall as pencil marks do not bleed. Glossy surfaces should either be sanded to dull the surface or an application of Professional R-35 heavy-duty primer should be made.

If future strippability is desired, a primer must be used. Some drywall joint compounds contrast with the drywall paper surface, showing strong light and dark colored areas. Very lightly colored, light-weight wallcoverings may allow show-through due to their limited amount of opacity. Should this situation occur, we recommend that you use a primer, then Koroseal Heavy Duty A-848-B Adhesive or equivalent.

Installing the Panels

All material must be installed in panel sequence. Graphic design of panels will determine seaming method to be implemented. Overlapping and double-cutting and pre-trimming both have advantages in making acceptable seams, but most murals are printed with overlap to be double cut. Do not “score” dry wall when double-cutting.

When hanging materials it is best to observe from a distance the first two or three sheets before continuing so any potential problems can be identified before the installation is complete.

Apply an even coat of adhesive to fabric side of material using a stiff bristle brush, roller or pasting machine in accordance with label recommendations. The wallcovering should be applied to the wall as soon as it has become tacky. Smooth the surface, working out air bubbles as you go using a wallcovering brush or soft plastic scraper. Avoid burnishing the surface of the print as you complete this step.

As each strip is installed, immediately remove excess adhesive from wallcovering surface and seams using natural sponge and a soft bristle brush frequently rinsed in clean warm water. Dry with clean cotton toweling, professional vinyl cleaner/wallpaper remover should be used where adhesive products have been specifically developed for use in these applications. We are not responsible for the appearance and performance of the wallcoverings not applied according to these instructions. Seams should not be located closer than 6” to outside or inside corners. Do not install wallcoverings unless a temperature above 55°F is maintained in both areas of installation and storage.

For those who are not aware of this, NIOSH has concluded that cadmium is possibly a human carcinogen and has recommended that exposure be controlled to the lowest level feasible. Since then, the use of cadmium and its disposal has come into question in American industries. Cadmium-containing chemicals have been used in the production of vinyl wallcoverings for many years, both as a heat stabilizer and as a color pigment. They performed well in both of these applications and were effective in meeting the market needs. However, the restrictions on use in Europe and Japan, and the growing discussion in the United States on the hazards associated with its use, were of concern.

The manufacturer and raw material suppliers developed replacement materials that would be cadmium-free and still meet the product requirements. This required extensive research and development trials to arrive at a cadmium-free heat stabilizer which could deal with the high processing heats, hold the film’s color, and not interfere with the printability of the film. This project was completed, and all cadmium was eliminated from use in these products.

The emboss vinyl wallcoverings are made with a special feature that gives off an Early Warning Effect® when heated to a point below fire ignition temperature. This can save lives by giving people extra time to leave a room before there’s smoke or open flames. The life-saving time made possible by this Early Warning Effect can vary from only a few seconds, in the case of a fast moving fire, to as much as a half hour or more when the heat of an impending fire is slowly building in intensity.

This Early Warning Effect® formulation works when as little as one (1) square foot of the Wallcovering is heated to about 300 degrees Fahrenheit - well below the ignition point of most common room materials. For example, newspaper ignites at a temperature of 445 degrees, and pine shavings ignite at 500 degrees.

At that point, the wallcovering gives off an odorless and colorless vapor that will set off the alarm on an ionization-type smoke detector. Consumer Reports magazine ran an article that claimed more than 85% of the commercial smoke detectors installed in the U.S. are ionization-type. The formulation of the Early Warning Effect has been demonstrated in a series of tests conducted by an independent laboratory in Texas.

Ionization-type smoke detectors utilize a low-level radiation source to generate a beam that can be interrupted by charged particles. They are the single most popular type of smoke detector on the market today. To see if a smoke detector is an ionization type, take the smoke detector off the wall or ceiling and examine the backside of it. If it is an ionization-type, there will be the symbol for radiation prominently displayed on the back. (The radiation symbol looks like a three bladed propeller.)

Keep in mind that the Early Warning Effect is triggered by heat on the wallcovering. Smoke or open flame elsewhere will not trigger the effect, but the normal operation of ionization-type smoke detectors should handle those situations.

Removable self adhesive products, such as Wallwrap or MagicStik, will adhere to most clean, smooth surfaces. Desired results have been achieved on a variety of surfaces including but not limited to drywall, wood paneling, glass, metal, and composite board constructions. These products may not adhere properly to textured surfaces such as textured paints, textured wallpaper, cinder block or brick, outdoor walls, or any surface that is jagged or rough. For best results we recommend dry wall that has been primed and painted (a white semi-gloss paint will promote the best adhesion and ease of removal). Please follow primer or paint instructions for application and optimal curing time prior to installing media.

Acclimation

Prior to install, the panels should be rolled out flat and allowed to relax and reach room temperature. Recommended room acclimation time is 2 hours.

Surface Preparation

Make sure the surface is clean, smooth, dry, undamaged, free of mold, mildew, grease or stains, and structurally intact. If moisture is present, immediately identify and eliminate the source(s) of the moisture and verify that all wall surfaces are completely dry before proceeding. Any mold or mildew MUST be removed from walls and hanging surfaces prior to installation. Use a warm damp cloth to wipe off any dirt or dust and allow the surface to completely dry prior to installation. Do not use any chemicals to clean the intended surface. These products have been tested on many surfaces and should stick aggressively. They can be repositioned and re-applied as long as the adhesive surface has not been contaminated with dirt, dust, finger prints, etc. Drywall surfaces should be prepared with primer and paint, for best results we recommend a semi-gloss paint. If newly painted allow to dry for 30 days prior to installation.

Installation

Determine the starting point for the graphic. Small images could start from the right or left side, but we recommend larger graphics begin by installing the center panel first. Note: Use care to make sure the panels will cover full height and width of the project area. Some floors and ceilings are not square, so make sure the graphic covers the widest or tallest areas for the project.

Create a plum line on the wall with a pencil to create an edge guide for each panel.

For ease of handling, roll the first panel into a tight roll with printed image rolled inside. Now unroll 6" and peel back the liner paper 6". Cut away the unrolled portion of lining paper to expose the adhesive backing. Using the plum line, carefully align the top of your panel so that it is square from side to side, and the edge matches with your plumb line. Now the 6" that was exposed can be stuck against the wall surface.

With the top of the panel properly adhered to the wall, slowly peel the next foot or so of backing. Try to expose only a few feet of adhesive at a time to prevent unwanted sticking of the lower parts of your graphic. Work you way down the panel using a felt wrapped squeegee to carefully smooth the material onto the wall. We recommend using slow and even pressured side to side strokes, starting from the middle of the panel and moving outward to the sides. Once a few feet of material has been stuck to the wall, it should be possible to allow the remaining portion of the panel to drop to the floor. Now you can simply continue the procedure to easily progress down the wall.

When the entire panel has been positioned properly and smoothed, be sure to press down on the perimeter edge of each individual panel to assure good adhesion at the seams and edges. Any bubbles under the material should come out during the smoothing process. If necessary you can lift the material to release stubborn bubbles or large wrinkles.

Install remaining panels using the same method as above. Panel seams should overlap 1/2" using care to make sure of proper graphic alignment during installation. After all panels are installed, trim perimeter "bleed" around all edges using a sharp utility knife.

Removal should be as simple as pulling down from one corner. These products were designed to cleanly and easily be removed in complete panels. If the wall surface was prepared properly there will be no damage to drywall.

For wallpaper and emboss vinyl wallcoverings, we generally recommend having a professional paper hanger install your mural. The process isn't any more difficult than installing other wallpaper, but since a custom wallpaper mural is more expensive than standard wallpaper, a mistake during installation could be more costly. For that reason, professional installation is the safest approach. Also, many people are used to installing wallpaper in smaller sections and may have a more difficult time with larger 48" panels.

Self adhesive products are more forgiving and are designed so that you can install them yourself without as much concern for ruining your mural. Since all our self adhesive products can be removed and reapplied, mistakes are much easier to correct without damaging the mural.

For Wallpaper

Clear adhesives such as Professional Ultra Premium Heavy Duty Clear Strippable (PRO-880), Golden Harvest GH-34 Clear Strippable, and Allpro Pro-Duty 3400 provide good adhesion and allow for easier stripping when the wall covering is to be removed or replaced.

Clay adhesives such as Professional Extra Strength (PRO-732), Professional Clay Strippable (PRO-774), Golden Harvest GH- 40, Allpro Extra Strength Vinyl 600, and Allpro Clay Strippable 661 have also been shown to be effective both during installation and the removal of these wallcovering materials.

Pastes such as Professional Heavy Duty Clear PRO-838 or Allpro Clear Hang 610 have a more aggressive adhesion and should be used for more permanent applications.

Vinyl over vinyl pastes tend to dry too quickly on these products and are not recommended.

For Emboss Vinyl Wallcoverings

There are only two major commercial grade wallcovering adhesive manufacturers remaining in the United States: Gardner-Gibson & Roman Decorative Products. They have consolidated market positions by developing numerous private label brands for most major retail paint store chains and in some cases mass-merchandising builder supply outlets. Their branded and private label products work quite well and can be used for a successful installation if these general guidelines are followed.

Always use a recommended compatible primer with the selected brand of adhesive. New sheet rock, previously painted sheetrock, sheetrock with wallcovering previously installed and subsequently removed (adhesive residue remaining), sheetrock in high humidity environments will require slightly different surface preparations and or formulations depending on job site conditions. There are primers for unique installations that can be used but close attention to individual job details are a big plus for successful installations.

We have found that water-based acrylic and or latex primers are preferred to almost all other types of primers. Paint stores will know the compatibility of their house brand of primers relative to their brand of adhesive relative to the condition of the installation surface. The good news is that it is not rocket science. The product information / application labels are actually pretty good in this industry.

The best general guidelines for a suitable wallcovering adhesive are as follows:

1) Premixed commercial grade available in one and five gallon buckets.

2) A “clay” premixed is the baseline for commercial wallcovering adhesives. All commercial wallcovering adhesives are water based. Clay based adhesives require a little more attention than a “clear cellulose” adhesive when they are dropped, smeared or spilled on surfaces other than the back of the wallcovering. A real “sea sponge is recommended for cleaning/removing clay based adhesive residue. Do not try to save a few dollars by buying a conventional sponge. A cheap sponge will spread the adhesive over a larger area and come back to haunt you when it dries. Rinse with clean water. Change water frequently. Some installers prefer clay based products because they can readily see the amount of adhesive that has been applied to the wallcovering or the wall if “dry hanging”. There also may be some additional “open time” (the amount of time available to install the material before it dries out) depending on the local temperature and humidity.

3) A “clear” (cellulose vs clay) based adhesive will minimize clean-up issues. It dries to a consistency similar to oatmeal residue and will flake off easily. Be careful around exotic finishes (silk, woods, etc...) regardless of what type of adhesive is used. One inch “blue” painters tape is great for a quick barrier between the finishes, over ceiling grids, moldings, etc...

4) A “strippable” commercial grade adhesive will facilitate future removal of material when you are ready to change the image/message. If you plan to change the mural at some point then seriously consider a strippable adhesive and suitable primer. You'll make the process of changing out the mural considerably easier.

Ordinary dirt and smudges can be removed with a mild soap and warm water. Clean from bottom of wall upward. Rinse thoroughly with clean water from the top down using a sponge. Deeply embossed wallcoverings need extra attention to remove suds or loosened dirt that may lodge in the embossing. Dry wallcovering with a soft lint free cloth or towel. For more difficult stains that are only surface deep, the use of a stronger detergent is recommended. Always test an inconspicuous area with the stronger detergent to be sure that the surface and ink are not damaged. DO NOT USE steel wool or powdered abrasive because they can damage the image and textured surface. DO NOT USE solvents, alcohol, pine oil, or cleaners that contain these kinds of products as they can remove the image and damage the textured surface. When cleaning, always take measures to prevent water from dripping behind molding.
