For installations that require removability with the option to reinstall, the WallWrap and PhotoStick fabric are excellent choices. The PhotoStick is our favorite it's a fabric material, which is different from all the other wall mural options. Normal removable adhesive products actually become more aggressive over time, so that after 6 months to a year, they are basically permanent and removing them can damage the wall. But PhotoStick stays removable and can even be reapplied multiple times so it's great for wall graphics and custom wall decals. Being a fabric, PhotoStick won't tear or wrinkle, which is a great feature, but it's also not as thick as the WallWrap which means you can get some show through if you install it over a dark or brightly colored wall or wallpaper, so it's best if used over a light surface.
MagicStik is an economical choice, but for larger graphics or intricate cut outs, don't expect to be able to remove and reuse the material. We've found it's too difficult for larger graphics to be removed without stretching or tearing the material, which makes it difficult or impossible to reinstall. Smaller wall graphics should not be a problem because they have less surface area, but it's not the best material if the ability to remove and reuse is important because of this.
For commercial installations on a budget, adhesive backed vinyls can be used, either directly on a smooth surface, or attached to a rigid or flexible substrate in panels for easy mounting. They can be protected with a laminate for greater durability. The Premium Calendared Adhesive Vinyl is our favorite because it prints well and has good adhesive that won't leave any residue behind when it's removed.
Building Wrap Vinyl is a great choice for covering otherwise difficult surfaces such as concrete, cinder block, brick and stucco. These surfaces are often left without graphics because most materials won't stick to them, but Building Wrap will stick, and come off cleanly when you want to remove it.
Keep in mind that most vinyls will shrink somewhat over time, so if you are using a vinyl for a multi-panel print, you will want to overlap the seams. See the FAQ section for detailed installation instructions.
Normal turnaround time is 4-5 business days. During the order process you will be asked if you have a specific due date, and if you do, we will adjust your shipping method, if necessary, to get your order to you on time. If you need your order even quicker, we also have a rush service. If you authorize rush charges, we can get your order shipped in 1-2 days. Rush charges are $75 per order. If we're able to meet your deadline without bumping other jobs, we won't actually charge the rush charge, but you must authorize the rush to guarantee delivery.
This is a difficult question to answer because of several factors, but in general, the bigger your original image, the better the results will be. As a general reference, an uncompressed file from a 5 megapixel camera will be reasonable quality for a full height wall graphic. An 8 megapixel camera will produce good results and 12 megapixels or more will produce very good results. Obviously, the more megapixels your camera has, the larger you can print your image without losing quality, all other things being equal. Because we use special software to enlarge images to their full print size, it's best not to enlarge your images before you send them. Textured wall graphic products will often make a questionable image look better than on smooth materials since the texture helps hide the lack of resolution. Another factor to consider is viewing distance. A print that shows a lack of resolution due to enlargement up close, might look just fine from arms length. We've printed images at 16 feet wide from 8 megapixel cameras that look very good from five feet away, so where a print will be displayed and how close you expect it to be viewed from are important to consider when deciding how large a print can be made. When in doubt, send us your file and we'll examine it and let you know how large we think it can go and still look good.
We don't charge either of these common fees. In our opinion, charging setup and RIP fees would be like advertising a price for gasoline, but charging a pumping fee to get it into your car. It's misleading and since you can't print a job without setting it up and processing it through a RIP, like the gasoline is of no use if it isn't pumped into your tank, it should be reflected in the prices already. They are just hidden fees to increase the cost of your job in a way that makes a companies printing prices look more competitive. As long as you provide print ready files, there are no additional charges related to printing your job.
If you want a wall decal that is cut out in a shape, there are two ways to go about this. The first way is for you to create a cut path yourself. Our wall decals are digitally die cut, so we need a vector path that can be used to tell the cutter where exactly you want your decal cut. This can be done in a drawing program such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, or you can draw the path in Photoshop and we can copy it out and use it. If you decide to do this, be sure you draw a complete, closed path and that you leave approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch of image outside the cut path to allow for variances in the cutting. The smaller your wall decal, the smaller the margin needs to be. Make the path a color that will stand out against your image and we will handle the technical details.
If you don't have the ability to create the cut path, or prefer not to, we can create it for you, but we do charge for the service. With most images, the cost is $20 but if you want to send us your file in advance, we can verify what the cost will be to create the cut path.
Removable self adhesive products, such as Wallwrap or MagicStik, will adhere to most clean, smooth surfaces. Desired results have been achieved on a variety of surfaces including but not limited to drywall, wood paneling, glass, metal, and composite board constructions. These products may not adhere properly to textured surfaces such as textured paints, textured wallpaper, cinder block or brick, outdoor walls, or any surface that is jagged or rough. For best results we recommend dry wall that has been primed and painted (a white semi-gloss paint will promote the best adhesion and ease of removal). Please follow primer or paint instructions for application and optimal curing time prior to installing media.
Acclimation
Prior to install, the wall graphic should be rolled out flat and allowed to relax and reach room temperature. Recommended room acclimation time is 2 hours.
Surface Preparation
Make sure the surface is clean, smooth, dry, undamaged, free of mold, mildew, grease or stains, and structurally intact. If moisture is present, immediately identify and eliminate the source(s) of the moisture and verify that all wall surfaces are completely dry before proceeding. Any mold or mildew MUST be removed from walls and hanging surfaces prior to installation. Use a warm damp cloth to wipe off any dirt or dust and allow the surface to completely dry prior to installation. Do not use any chemicals to clean the intended surface. This product has been tested on many surfaces and should stick aggressively. It can be repositioned and re-applied as long as the adhesive surface has not been contaminated with dirt, dust, finger prints, etc. Drywall surfaces should be prepared with primer and paint, for best results we recommend a semi-gloss paint. If newly painted allow to dry for 30 days prior to installation.
Installation
These instructions assume you have a wall decal or wall graphic that is not a large multi-panel image. If you do have a large image, visit our Wallpaper Murals page and look in the FAQ tab for the appropriate installation instructions. For very small wall graphic, you may be able to just peel the wall decal off the release liner and stick it to the wall. But, for a more precise installation, or for graphics that are a little larger and more difficult to handle, it's best to start by positioning the wall graphic where you want it go, and taping it in place with a small piece of low tack painters tape, or something similar, on the left and right hand edges of the wall graphic. This will create a sort of hinge through the middle of the wall graphic so the top can fold over and hang down. Be sure not to use an aggressive tape or it could damage the printed image when you remove it. Now peel back the liner paper from top of the decal about 2-3". Cut away the lining paper from this 2-3" area to expose the adhesive backing and stick the exposed area to the wall, smoothing it down from the center outward to prevent any bubbles. If you need to, you can carefully peel up the area and restick it if you do get bubble or make a mistake.
With the top of the wall decal properly adhered, remove the tape holding the sides of the decal. Now lift the bottom of the decal so you can get to the back side and peel back another 6" of the release liner to expose more of the adhesive. Working from the top, smooth the graphic to the wall using a felt wrapped squeegee, working from the center out to the left and right with overlapping strokes to make sure the wall graphic is fully stuck to the wall. If you don't have a felt wrapped squeegee, you can use your hand, a soft squeegee, or even a credit card wrapped in a soft cloth to smooth down the graphic, depending on what material your wall graphic is printed on. Try to expose only a few inches of adhesive at a time to prevent unwanted sticking of the lower parts of your graphic. Work you way down the wall graphic to carefully smooth the material onto the wall. We recommend using slow and even pressured side to side strokes, starting from the middle of the panel and moving outward to the sides. Now you can simply continue the procedure to easily progress down the wall.
When the entire wall decal has been applied properly and smoothed, be sure to press down on the perimeter edges to assure good adhesion. Any bubbles under the material should come out during the smoothing process. If necessary you can lift the material to release stubborn bubbles or large wrinkles.
Removal of this product should be as simple as pulling down from one corner. The product was designed to cleanly and easily be removed in complete panels. If the wall surface was prepared properly there will be no damage to drywall.
Self adhesive products are reasonably forgiving and are designed so that you can install them yourself without much concern for ruining your wall graphic. Since our self adhesive products can be removed and reapplied, mistakes are much easier to correct without damaging the decal.
Ordinary dirt and smudges can be removed with a mild soap and warm water. Clean from the bottom of the wall upward. Rinse thoroughly with clean water from the top down using a sponge. Deeply embossed wallcoverings need extra attention to remove suds or loosened dirt that may lodge in the embossing. Dry wallcovering with a soft lint free cloth or towel. For more difficult stains that are only surface deep, the use of a stronger detergent is recommended. Always test an inconspicuous area with the stronger detergent to be sure that the surface and ink are not damaged. DO NOT USE steel wool or powdered abrasive because they can damage the image and textured surface. DO NOT USE solvents, alcohol, pine oil, or cleaners that contain these kinds of products as they can remove the image and damage the textured surface. When cleaning, always take measures to prevent water from dripping behind molding.
